Age: Cretaceous

Location: Madagascar

Size (picture scale cube=1cm): 96 x 29 x 80mm (3.78 x 1.14 x 3.15 inches)

Ammonites are one of the most recognisable fossils around, this is due to their familiar spiral shape shell, reminiscent of what we know as a snail shell, though these creatures are not related to snails at all! They were marine animals, present between 240 – 65 million years ago, who had a coiled external shell similar to that of the modern nautilus, and although they resembled a modern day nautilus, these molluscs are more closely related to living coleoids (i.e. octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish!)

These beautiful whole Ammonites have an amazing colourful pearlescent shimmer to them.

ACTUAL AS SEEN: The image shows the EXACT specimen you will receive. The specimen has been carefully hand selected and photographed. Measurements are as accurate as possible, though be aware measuring precise dimensions can be difficult from irregular shaped items. Whilst we portray colours as close to life-like as we can, colours will vary if taken in sunlight, indoors, from monitor to monitor and device to device. Once this specimen is sold, we will update this listing with new similar selected item, with a new photo and dimensions.

Description

This listing features a beautiful Silver/Grey Whole Ammonite Fossil from Madagascar, dating to the Cretaceous Period, approximately 145 to 66 million years ago. Ammonites are among the most instantly recognisable of all fossils, known for their distinctive spiral-shaped shells which bear a striking resemblance to modern snail shells—although they are, in fact, unrelated.

Ammonites were marine molluscs with coiled external shells. Although they looked similar to today’s nautilus, they are more closely related to the modern squid, octopus, and cuttlefish—collectively known as coleoids. These ancient creatures lived in the world’s oceans for millions of years, and their fossils have been discovered on every continent.

This particular specimen is notable for its gorgeous silver/grey coloration and pearlescent iridescent sheen, which catches the light beautifully. Madagascan ammonites are celebrated for their exceptional preservation and natural beauty, often found in limestone matrices which enhance their stunning detail.

This whole fossil ammonite is a fascinating piece of natural history, ideal for fossil collectors, geology enthusiasts, or those looking for a unique and scientifically significant decorative piece.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
