Ammonites are one of the most recognisable fossils around, this is due to their familiar spiral shape shell, reminiscent of what we know as a snail shell, though these creatures are not related to snails at all. They were marine animals, present between 240 – 65 million years ago, who had a coiled external shell similar to that of the modern nautilus, and although they resembled a modern day nautilus, these molluscs are more closely related to living coleoids i.e. octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish.

These stunningly beautiful Ammonites have been sliced in half and polished to expose the amazing colourful chambers inside the fossil.

ACTUAL AS SEEN: The image shows the EXACT specimen you will receive. The specimen has been carefully hand selected and photographed. Measurements are as accurate as possible, though be aware measuring precise dimensions can be difficult from irregular shaped items. Whilst we portray colours as close to life-like as we can, colours will vary if taken in sunlight, indoors, from monitor to monitor and device to device. Once this specimen is sold, we will update this listing with new similar selected item, with a new photo and dimensions.

About Ammonites:

Ammonites were extinct marine molluscs that thrived for over 300 million years, from the Devonian Period until their extinction at the end of the Cretaceous. While their coiled shells resemble those of modern snails, ammonites are actually more closely related to modern-day squid, octopuses, and cuttlefish (coleoids), not gastropods.

These ancient cephalopods had a coiled, chambered shell, which they used for buoyancy control, similar to the modern nautilus. The intricate internal chambers are often filled with calcite crystals and mineral deposits, which, when polished, reveal spectacular natural patterns—a true testament to nature’s beauty.

About This Specimen:

This ammonite fossil has been expertly sliced in half and polished, showcasing the unique internal chamber structures and vibrant coloration caused by mineralisation over millions of years. The result is a captivating display piece with incredible aesthetic appeal and scientific value.

Each chamber once held gas or liquid, allowing the ammonite to move vertically in the water. The polished surface highlights these details beautifully—often revealing amber, honey, brown, and even iridescent hues, depending on the mineral content and preservation.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
