Cretaceous ammonite fossil – polished half – madagascar – vibrant chambered shell – genuine specimen with certificate

£19.20

Ammonites are one of the most recognisable fossils around, this is due to their familiar spiral shape shell reminiscent of what we know as a snail shell, though these creatures are not related to snails at all! They were marine animals, present between 240 – 65 million years ago, that had a coiled external shell similar to that of the modern-day nautilus, and although they resembled a nautilus, these molluscs are more closely related to living Coleoids, i.e. octopus, squid, and cuttlefish!

These beautiful Ammonites have been sliced in half and polished to expose the amazingly colourful inner chambers of the fossil.

Description

This listing features a genuine Cretaceous Ammonite fossil from Madagascar, presented as a single sliced and polished half, showcasing its beautifully preserved internal chambers. These internal structures have been naturally mineralised over millions of years, producing stunning colourful patterns that are revealed through the polishing process.

Ammonites are among the most recognisable and iconic fossils due to their distinctive spiral-shaped shells. Though their shells resemble those of modern snails, Ammonites were marine molluscs more closely related to present-day squid, cuttlefish, and octopus. They thrived in the world’s oceans from around 240 to 65 million years ago, and this particular specimen is from the Cretaceous Period, approximately 145 to 66 million years ago.

These fascinating creatures moved through the water by jet propulsion, expelling water from their body cavity to push themselves forward. Ammonites came in various shapes and sizes, from a few millimetres to giants reaching up to 8 feet in diameter.

Each fossil tells a story of ancient marine ecosystems and provides a direct connection to the deep geological past. This specimen has been professionally sliced and polished to both preserve and highlight its natural beauty. Whether you’re a collector, educator, or simply love Earth’s natural history, this ammonite makes for a unique display or thoughtful gift.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
