Ammonites are one of the most recognisable fossils around the world due to their familiar spiral shape. They were marine based, present between 240 – 65 million years ago. They are the most  popular fossil for collections and found all over the world. Some ammonites could reach up to 2 metres in size. Children love collecting them, and places like Lyme Regis in Dorset becomes busy during the summer months with many people trying their luck at finding impressions in the rocks of their own ammonites

Description

This listing features an authentic Jurassic ammonite fossil, most commonly from the species Hildoceras sp., discovered in the fossil-rich region of Somerset, United Kingdom. These remarkable fossils date back to the Jurassic Period, approximately 201 to 145 million years ago, when this area was submerged beneath a shallow tropical sea.

Ammonites are among the most recognisable and sought-after fossils due to their iconic spiral shell shape, which resembles a coiled ram’s horn. While they look similar to snail shells, they were actually marine cephalopods related more closely to modern-day squid, octopus, and cuttlefish than to gastropods. Ammonites moved by jet propulsion, squirting water through a siphon to propel themselves through the ancient oceans.

Ammonite fossils vary in size from tiny millimetre-wide specimens to giants reaching up to 2 metres in diameter. These fossils provide valuable insights into the marine ecosystems of the Mesozoic Era and make stunning additions to any fossil collection.

Somerset ammonites, including Hildoceras, are often found in grey limestone or shale layers and are treasured by collectors, educators, and fossil enthusiasts alike. The area around Lyme Regis and the Jurassic Coast is especially popular for fossil hunting, attracting people of all ages who hope to find ammonites embedded in the rock.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
