Description

Sphaeroceras brogniarti Ammonite Fossil

Geology and locality

This genuine Sphaeroceras brogniarti ammonite fossil comes from Verson in Calvados, Normandy, France. It dates to the Middle Jurassic, Bajocian stage, a period when warm shallow seas covered much of north-western Europe. The specimen is a carefully chosen original fossil, and the photographs show the exact piece that you will receive. Please refer to the images for full measurements, size and condition detail.

The Jurassic world

During the Bajocian, around 170 million years ago, Normandy lay beneath a marine environment rich in invertebrate life. Sediments deposited on the sea floor later became fossil-bearing limestone and marl. Ammonites are among the most useful fossils for understanding these ancient seas because many species evolved rapidly and their shells occur widely in Jurassic rocks.

About Sphaeroceras brogniarti

Sphaeroceras brogniarti is an ammonite, an extinct marine cephalopod related to today’s nautiluses, squid and octopus. Its characteristic coiled shell was built in a series of chambers as the animal grew. The chambered structure helped the living animal control buoyancy in the water column. The preserved spiral form, ribbing and shell shape make ammonites a classic focus for fossil collectors, geology displays and palaeontology study.

Collecting and display

This Middle Jurassic ammonite is an attractive addition to a fossil cabinet, educational collection or natural-history display. French Jurassic fossils are especially appealing to collectors interested in European geology and ammonite diversity. It is a genuine specimen and includes a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card. Handle carefully, keep dry and avoid prolonged direct sunlight. The supplied photographs are of the actual fossil offered, not a representative stock image.
