Sphaerotiaris sp Regular Echinoid Fossil Bajocian Jurassic Morocco Genuine Specimen

£12.00

This listing features a genuine and beautifully preserved Sphaerotiaris sp fossil, an excellent example of a regular echinoid (sea urchin) from the Bajocian Stage of the Middle Jurassic Period (approximately 170 to 168 million years ago). This fossil comes from marine deposits in Morocco, a renowned region for well-preserved Jurassic invertebrate fossils.

Geology & Origin:

During the Bajocian, Morocco was part of a warm, shallow sea teeming with marine life. Regular echinoids like Sphaerotiaris lived on the seafloor, using their spines for defense and movement. Upon death, their tests (shells) were rapidly buried under sediment, where mineralisation preserved them in striking detail. Today, the fossil beds of Morocco yield some of the finest echinoid specimens from this time period.

  • Type: Fossil Echinoid (Regular Sea Urchin)
  • Genus: Sphaerotiaris
  • Preservation: Excellent, showcasing fine detail of the test and tubercles

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
