Squalicorax pristodontus Fossil Shark Tooth | Cow Shark | Cretaceous Morocco | Genuine Dinosaur-Era Fossil Tooth

£12.60

This listing features a genuine Fossil Shark Tooth from the extinct species Squalicorax pristodontus, commonly referred to as the “Crow Shark” or sometimes loosely as a “Cow Shark” (note: taxonomically distinct). This specimen originates from the Upper Cretaceous deposits of Morocco, making it a relic from the age of the dinosaurs—approximately 100 to 66 million years ago.

Geological Details:

  • Formation: Phosphatic beds, often associated with the Ouled Abdoun Basin
  • Geological Period: Late Cretaceous (specifically Maastrichtian Stage, if locality matches typical horizon)
  • Depositional Environment: Shallow marine shelf; warm, nutrient-rich seas teeming with fish and marine reptiles

Paleontological Context: Squalicorax pristodontus is part of the extinct Order Lamniformes (mackerel sharks) and belonged to the Family Anacoracidae. These sharks were mid-sized, carnivorous predators or scavengers known for their distinctive serrated teeth, which resemble those of modern tiger sharks. Fossils have been found alongside dinosaur bones bearing tooth marks, suggesting scavenging behavior.

  • Genus: Squalicorax
  • Species: pristodontus

Morphological Features:

  • Triangular crown with well-developed, serrated cutting edges
  • Lingual face (rear) slightly convex
  • Enamel well-preserved with dark natural patina
  • Moderate to large size (varies by specimen)

Notable Characteristics:

  • Excellent preservation of serrations and enamel
  • From a classic fossil-rich Moroccan site
  • Highly sought after by collectors for its aesthetic and scientific appeal

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
