Description
This superbly preserved ammonite fossil is a striking example of Stegoxyites parcicarinatus, an extinct cephalopod species from the Middle Bajocian Stage of the Jurassic Period, dating to approximately 170 million years ago. This particular specimen was discovered in the fossil-rich layers of Oborne Wood, near Sherborne, Dorset, UK, a location renowned for yielding high-quality ammonites from the Inferior Oolite Formation.
Stegoxyites parcicarinatus is noted for its distinct, ornamented ribbing and shell structure, which reflect its adaptation to ancient marine environments. As with other ammonites, it had a coiled, chambered shell used for buoyancy control, and it thrived in the warm Jurassic seas.
This fossil is part of the prestigious Alice Purnell Collection, known for housing well-documented and expertly curated paleontological specimens. This ammonite has been professionally cleaned and prepped, ensuring maximum detail and preservation—perfect for collectors, educational purposes, or natural history display.
