Steinkerns Fossil Sponge Faringdon Gravels Cretaceous UK Genuine Marine Fossil Display Specimen

£43.20

This beautiful and authentic fossil sponge from the famous Faringdon Sponge Gravels of Oxfordshire is a classic example of a “Steinkern” internal mould fossil, representing the internal structure of ancient sponges from the Early Cretaceous period. Estimated to be around 130 million years old, this marine fossil gives a unique insight into sponge preservation in a complex depositional environment.

These sponges, often represented as Steinkerns (internal casts), were preserved when silts and sands filled the internal chambers and hardened, long after the organic structure decayed. Many Faringdon fossils exhibit exceptional three-dimensional preservation due to this process. The surrounding gravels are also known for their reworked and diverse faunal content, making them geologically significant and highly collectable.

This specimen was carefully selected for its distinct structure and preserved form. The photo shows the exact fossil you will receive. Scale cube/squares = 1cm for accurate sizing.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
