MORPHOLOGICAL & GEOLOGICAL CONTEXT:
Stiphothyris tumida is a well-known terebratulid brachiopod characteristic of the Inferior Oolite Formation, deposited in a shallow marine carbonate platform environment typical of the Middle Jurassic Bajocian Stage. The Inferior Oolite of Gloucestershire is renowned for its fossil-rich oolitic limestones, indicative of high-energy shallow shelf deposition in a warm, subtropical sea.
- Morphological Features:
- Stiphothyris tumida is identified by its thick-shelled, biconvex valves, with a smooth to faintly ribbed surface, a short hingeline, and a prominent beak. It has a strong pedicle opening, typical of the Terebratulida, and a relatively tumid (swollen) appearance — hence the name “tumida.”
- Depositional Environment:
- Fossils from the Inferior Oolite are typically preserved within oolitic limestone — a marine sediment made up of ooids formed in warm, agitated water. Brachiopods such as Stiphothyris tumida would have lived attached to hard substrates in these shallow waters.
- Stratigraphic Significance:
- While this species is widespread in the Bajocian stage of the Middle Jurassic, it may help constrain strata within the Discites Zone of the Inferior Oolite, although exact biozone placement for this specimen is undetermined.
- Notable Information:
- Stiphothyris tumida was originally described in the 19th century and is one of the key diagnostic brachiopod species used in British Middle Jurassic biostratigraphy. Its robust shell and regular appearance in the fossil record make it a classic collector’s specimen.
