Age: Cretaceous

Location: Bolivia

Size (picture scale cube=1cm):   25 x 17 x 13mm (0.98 x 0.67 x 0.51 inches)

Stromatolites are layered bio-chemical accretionary structures [algea] formed in shallow water by the trapping, binding and cementation of sedimentary grains by biofilms of micro-organisms. This Cretaceous aged specimen is ‘relatively’ young, considering the Stromatolites from the Strelley Pool Formation, found in Australia, are dated to more than 3.5 billion years old and classed as the oldest fossil to date! This formation is within the Pilbara Supergroup and an extremely important site for scientists to study.

Description

Own a tangible piece of Earth’s biological heritage with this Cretaceous Stromatolite Fossil from Bolivia, a fossilised remnant of some of the oldest and most important lifeforms to have ever existed. Stromatolites are layered sedimentary formations created by ancient microbial mats—primarily cyanobacteria—that grew in shallow marine environments and played a major role in oxygenating Earth’s atmosphere.

This specimen dates back to the Cretaceous Period (~145–66 million years ago), making it a relatively young stromatolite when compared to the oldest known examples, such as those from the Strelley Pool Formation in Australia, which are over 3.5 billion years old. These earliest stromatolites form a significant part of our understanding of early Earth and the origins of life.

Stromatolites form through the trapping, binding, and cementation of sedimentary grains by biofilms of micro-organisms like cyanobacteria and algae. Over time, these layered accretionary structures became preserved as fossils in the rock record. The growth pattern creates a distinctive banded or domed appearance, making them visually and scientifically compelling.

This particular piece from Bolivia showcases the classic layered texture, with subtle colour banding and fine biological structure. It is ideal for display, teaching, or scientific study.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
