Stromatolites are layered bio-chemical accretionary structures formed in shallow water by the trapping, binding and cementation of sedimentary grains by biofilms of micro-organisms. The Strelley Pool Formation is dated to more than 3.5 billion years old and found in Australia. This formation is within the Pilbara Supergroup and an extremely important site for scientists to study.

This remarkable specimen was discovered in Western Australia, within the Pilbara Craton, an area that provides extraordinary insight into the early biosphere of our planet.

Stromatolites are laminated, bio-chemical sedimentary structures formed in shallow marine waters by the activity of photosynthetic cyanobacteria (blue-green algae). These micro-organisms trapped and bound fine grains of sediment, forming layered accretionary structures over time. As such, stromatolites represent some of the earliest biological activity ever recorded in the geological record.
