This ammonite originates from the Middle Oxfordian, a stage within the Upper Jurassic, dating back approximately 160 million years. The Oxfordian period was characterized by warm, shallow seas, which supported abundant marine life, including ammonites. These fossils are particularly valuable for biostratigraphic dating, helping geologists to identify and correlate Jurassic rock layers across different regions.

Subplanites belonged to the subclass Ammonoidea, an extinct group of marine mollusks closely related to modern squids and octopuses. These creatures were fast-moving marine predators, using their chambered shells for buoyancy control to navigate ancient oceans. Their ribbed shell structures provided both protection from predators and additional structural reinforcement.
