Description
Rare Temnodontosaurus Vertebra – Giant Ichthyosaur Fossil from Lyme Regis
This rare Temnodontosaurus vertebra fossil is an exceptional example of a giant ichthyosaur from the Lower Lias of the Jurassic Coast, Lyme Regis, Dorset, UK. Sourced from one of the most famous fossil localities in the world, this specimen represents a powerful marine reptile that dominated Early Jurassic seas. The fossil shown in the photographs is the exact specimen you will receive, carefully selected for its quality, structure, and display appeal.
Geological Age & Formation
This vertebra originates from the Lower Jurassic period, approximately 190–200 million years ago, within the Lower Lias deposits of Lyme Regis. These sediments were laid down in a warm, shallow marine environment, rich in marine life. The fine-grained clays and limestones of this formation are renowned for preserving marine reptiles, ammonites, and other fossils in remarkable detail.
Taxonomy & Classification
- Order: Ichthyosauria
- Family: Temnodontosauridae
- Genus: Temnodontosaurus
Temnodontosaurus was one of the largest ichthyosaurs, reaching lengths of up to 10 metres or more. Its name means “cutting-tooth lizard,” referencing its large, conical teeth adapted for hunting sizeable prey.
Morphology & Notable Features
This vertebra displays the classic spool-shaped (amphicoelous) structure typical of ichthyosaur vertebrae, with concave articular surfaces on both ends. The dense bone structure reflects the powerful musculature that once supported a fast-swimming apex predator. The fossilisation process has preserved fine surface textures, giving insight into the internal structure and strength of the vertebral column.
Temnodontosaurus was a highly adapted marine reptile with a streamlined body, large eyes for deep or low-light hunting, and strong jaws capable of capturing fish, squid, and other marine reptiles. Vertebrae such as this formed part of a flexible yet robust spinal column, allowing for efficient, rapid swimming through Jurassic seas.
Depositional Environment
The Lower Lias of Lyme Regis represents a marine depositional setting where sediment accumulated in relatively calm waters. Periodic low-oxygen conditions helped limit scavenging and decay, allowing bones such as this vertebra to be preserved. The area is globally recognised for yielding some of the finest ichthyosaur remains ever discovered.
Discovery & Expert Preparation
This fossil was discovered by our dedicated team members, Alister and Alison, along the Jurassic Coast. Following recovery, it was professionally cleaned, stabilised, and prepared by Alison to ensure both its preservation and presentation. Every effort has been made to maintain the natural integrity of the specimen while enhancing its display quality.
Authenticity & Provenance
This is a genuine Temnodontosaurus fossil and includes a Certificate of Authenticity with a lifetime guarantee. All specimens are responsibly sourced and prepared, offering collectors complete confidence in their purchase.
Display & Collectability
Ichthyosaur vertebrae from Temnodontosaurus are highly sought after due to their rarity and association with one of the largest marine reptiles of the Jurassic. This specimen is ideal for collectors of marine reptile fossils, educational displays, or as a striking natural history piece. Its connection to Lyme Regis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, further enhances its desirability and provenance.
