This genuine Tissotia tissotia ammonite fossil is a collectable Upper Cretaceous marine cephalopod specimen from Abu Roash, Giza Governorate, Egypt. Dating from the Santonian Stage of the Late Cretaceous, approximately 86 to 83 million years old, this fossil represents an ancient ammonite from the warm marine environments that once covered parts of North Africa and the southern margin of the Tethys Ocean.

Geology and Geological Age

Tissotia tissotia comes from the Santonian Stage of the Upper Cretaceous Period, a time when sea levels were high and shallow marine conditions extended across large regions of present-day Egypt. The Abu Roash area, west of Cairo in the Giza Governorate, is well known for its Cretaceous sedimentary rocks and fossil-bearing beds, including limestone, marl and other marine deposits.

During the Santonian, the Abu Roash region lay within a warm subtropical marine setting connected to the ancient Tethys Ocean. These seas supported a diverse range of marine life, including ammonites, bivalves, gastropods, echinoids, fish, sharks and other invertebrates. Ammonites such as Tissotia were active swimming cephalopods, related to modern squid, octopus and cuttlefish, but with a coiled external shell divided internally into chambers.

Fossil Type and Species

This specimen belongs to the ammonite species Tissotia tissotia, a distinctive Late Cretaceous ammonite associated with North African marine deposits.
