Titanosaurs were a diverse group of Sauropod Dinosaurs which were present about 136 to 66 million years ago. They were some of the heaviest creatures ever to walk the earth, but despite their huge body size, the eggs of Titanosaurus were relatively small in comparison. Females would dig holes with their back feet, lay around 25 eggs in the ‘nest’ then conceal them with a layer of dirt and vegetation for warmth, and protection from predators!

This listing is for a genuine fragment of a fossilised Titanosaur eggshell, a rare and scientifically significant piece of prehistoric history from the Cretaceous beds of France.

Titanosaurs were an incredibly diverse group of long-necked sauropod dinosaurs, known for their massive size and global distribution during the Late Cretaceous. Although some individuals could exceed 30 metres in length and weigh over 70 tonnes, their eggs were surprisingly small, typically around 15-20cm in diameter. These were laid in shallow, covered nests where conditions allowed for natural incubation through a mixture of earth insulation and rotting vegetation.

The eggshells, once soft and vulnerable, underwent fossilisation over millions of years, resulting in the preserved fragments that are now highly prized by collectors and palaeontology enthusiasts.

This specimen displays the textured outer surface typical of sauropod eggs, featuring fine ridges, pores, and curves indicative of the nesting structure and eggshell thickness. These clues offer researchers and collectors insights into dinosaur reproduction, nesting behaviour, and embryonic development.

Geological Background:

The Cretaceous period (145.5–65.5 million years ago) was the final era of the dinosaurs, ending with the mass extinction event that wiped out all non-avian dinosaurs. During this time, Europe was a series of subtropical islands, offering ideal conditions for nesting dinosaurs, particularly in regions of present-day France and Spain, which have yielded some of the best preserved dinosaur eggshell fossils globally.
