Titanosaurs were a diverse group of Sauropod Dinosaurs which were present about 136 to 66 million years ago. They were some of the heaviest creatures ever to walk the earth, but despite their huge body size, the eggs of Titanosaurus were relatively small in comparison. Females would dig holes with their back feet, lay around 25 eggs in the ‘nest’ then conceal them with a layer of dirt and vegetation for warmth and protection from predators!

About Titanosaurs – The Colossal Giants:

Titanosaurs were a diverse and globally distributed group of long-necked, plant-eating sauropod dinosaurs that lived during the Late Jurassic and throughout the Cretaceous Period. With lengths ranging from 10 to over 30 metres, they include some of the largest land animals in Earth’s history, such as Argentinosaurus, Dreadnoughtus, and Patagotitan.

While they were titanic in stature, Titanosaurs reproduced with surprisingly small eggs. Fossil nests discovered in France and other parts of Europe show that females would lay up to 25 eggs in shallow pits, carefully covering them with soil and plant matter for protection and incubation.

Titanosaurs were widespread during the Cretaceous and thrived on every continent, including Europe. Fossil discoveries in southern France have helped paleontologists better understand the migration and diversification of these colossal creatures.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
