Tmetoceras scissum Ammonite Fossil

Lower Bajocian Fossil from the Middle Jurassic

This genuine Tmetoceras scissum ammonite fossil comes from West Bay, near Bridport in Dorset, UK. It dates to the Lower Bajocian, a stage within the Middle Jurassic Period. With a named species, clear geological age and classic Dorset coastal locality, it is an attractive specimen for ammonite collectors, geology students, natural history enthusiasts and anyone assembling a cabinet of curiosities.

The photographs show the actual fossil you will receive. Its individual preservation, colour, matrix and visible shell detail are represented by this exact set of images, so please study them carefully when assessing the specimen and its condition.

The Tmetoceras scissum Ammonite

Tmetoceras is an extinct genus of ammonite, part of the diverse marine cephalopod fauna that inhabited Jurassic seas. Ammonites carried coiled, chambered shells. As an animal grew, it moved forward into a larger outer living chamber while the older internal chambers remained behind. These shells fossilised in marine sediments and now provide some of the most recognisable evidence of prehistoric ocean life.

This specimen is identified as Tmetoceras scissum. When palaeontologists examine ammonites, useful characteristics can include the outline and expansion of the coil, the amount of overlap between successive whorls, the shape of the whorl section, the form of the opening and any ribs or other ornament preserved on the shell. The photographs offer the best guide to which of these features are visible on this individual fossil.

Geological Age and Dorset Locality

The Lower Bajocian belongs to the Middle Jurassic and represents a time more than 165 million years ago. During the Jurassic, ammonites evolved rapidly and became widespread in marine environments. Their changing shell forms allow many ammonite groups to be useful for comparing the relative ages of sedimentary rocks, making them important fossils for the study of Jurassic geology and biostratigraphy.

The stated locality is West Bay, Bridport, Dorset, UK. Dorset is internationally associated with fossil-bearing Jurassic rocks, and a specimen with a documented West Bay origin offers both scientific and geographical context. This ammonite preserves a small piece of the marine history recorded by the rocks of the region.

A fossil is a natural geological object rather than a manufactured ornament. Variations in surface texture, incomplete areas, mineral deposits and attached matrix may reflect burial, fossilisation and later exposure. These natural features contribute to the individuality and history of the piece.

Display, Study and Collecting

This Tmetoceras scissum fossil is suitable for a fossil collection, study display, natural history cabinet, office, classroom or geology-themed interior. It may also make a thoughtful gift for an ammonite collector, palaeontology enthusiast, fossil hunter or student of Earth history.

For full sizing, please refer to the photographs. The carefully chosen specimen pictured is the actual fossil supplied, not a representative example. Viewing both images will help you appreciate its outline, preservation, surface detail and dimensions before purchase.

Authenticity and Certificate

This is a genuine fossil specimen. It includes a generic Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee card, providing an enduring authenticity assurance for the collector. The certificate card will accompany the fossil.
