Description
Tragophylloceras (Epideroceras) ibex Fossil Ammonite – Pliensbachian, Jurassic – Calvados, France
About the Fossil:
This beautifully preserved Tragophylloceras (Epideroceras) ibex ammonite fossil comes from the Pliensbachian stage of the Early Jurassic (~190-183 million years ago) and was discovered in Calvados, France. Tragophylloceras is a genus of evolute ammonites with moderately compressed whorls and intricate ribbing patterns, making them a fascinating addition to any fossil collection. The subspecies Epideroceras ibex is known for its prominent ribbing and detailed suture lines, reflecting the evolutionary complexity of Early Jurassic ammonites.
During the Early Jurassic, ammonites like Tragophylloceras ibex thrived in shallow marine environments, forming an essential part of the marine ecosystem. Their distinctive coiled shells provided protection against predators, while their ability to control buoyancy allowed them to move freely through the water column. The Pliensbachian deposits of Calvados, France, are famous for yielding exceptionally well-preserved ammonite fossils, providing valuable insights into cephalopod evolution during the Jurassic.
