Description
Genuine Tragophylloceras Golden Pyrite Ammonite – Jurassic Coast Fossil from Lyme Regis
Presented here is a beautiful and highly collectible Tragophylloceras Golden Pyrite Ammonite Fossil, recovered from the famous Black Ven Marls of Stonebarrow Cliff, Charmouth, on the world-renowned Jurassic Coast, near Lyme Regis, Dorset, UK.
This is an exceptional Lower Jurassic ammonite, preserved with striking golden pyrite mineralisation that gives the fossil a rich metallic lustre and enhances the natural shell detail. Pyritised ammonites from Charmouth are increasingly scarce and remain among the most visually desirable fossils from the British Jurassic Coast.
The fossil shown in the photographs is the exact specimen you will receive. Full sizing is provided in the images, and this piece has been carefully chosen for its strong preservation, attractive form, and bright pyrite finish.
Your specimen was discovered by our own experienced team members, Alister and Alison, on 25 January 2026, and has been professionally cleaned, prepared, and treated by Alison to ensure long-term stability and display readiness.
This fossil is 100% genuine and includes a Certificate of Authenticity with lifetime guarantee, supplied as a generic authenticity card for complete peace of mind.
Geological Setting – Black Ven Marls, Lower Lias, Early Jurassic
This ammonite originates from the renowned Black Ven Marls, part of the Lower Lias Group, dating back approximately 190–200 million years to the Early Jurassic Period.
During this time, Dorset was submerged beneath a warm, shallow tropical sea rich in marine biodiversity. Ammonites flourished alongside belemnites, fish, crustaceans, and iconic marine reptiles such as ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs.
The marls and mudstones of Charmouth accumulated slowly on the sea floor, creating ideal burial conditions that preserved shells in remarkable detail. Stonebarrow Cliff is internationally famous for producing beautifully preserved ammonites, including rare golden pyritised forms like this Tragophylloceras.
Fossil Species – Tragophylloceras Ammonite
Tragophylloceras is a distinctive Early Jurassic ammonite genus within the subclass Ammonoidea, class Cephalopoda. These extinct marine molluscs were close relatives of modern squid and cuttlefish, living as active swimmers and predators in Jurassic seas.
Tragophylloceras is especially appreciated for:
- Its smooth, elegant whorl profile
- Fine natural shell curvature
- Compact coiling and balanced proportions
- Strong appeal as both a collector fossil and display specimen
This genus represents classic Lyme Regis ammonite fauna and is highly sought after when preserved in pyrite, where delicate shell features become beautifully highlighted.
Golden Pyrite Preservation – Natural Metallic Fossil Beauty
One of the most remarkable aspects of this fossil is its golden pyrite mineralisation. Pyritisation occurs during fossilisation when iron sulphide minerals replace or coat the shell, creating a brilliant metallic finish.
Golden pyrite ammonites from Charmouth are prized because:
- They are increasingly rare and collectible
- Pyrite enhances ribbing and fine shell detail
- Each specimen is naturally unique in colour and texture
- They provide a stunning blend of palaeontology and mineral beauty
This Tragophylloceras is a superb example of this preservation style, offering both scientific value and exceptional visual appeal.
