Triassic Trace Fossil Burrow – Wilsmslow Sandstone Formation, Triassic – Alderley Edge, Cheshire, UK

100% Genuine Fossil with Certificate of Authenticity

We are excited to present this Triassic trace fossil burrow, discovered in the Wilsmslow Sandstone Formation at Alderley Edge, Cheshire, UK. This specimen dates from the Triassic Period, around 250 to 200 million years ago. Trace fossils like this one are created by the activity of ancient organisms, and this particular specimen likely represents burrowing behaviors from early terrestrial creatures that inhabited the environment during the Triassic.

Geological and Fossil Information:

  • Fossil Type: Trace Fossil Burrow
  • Species: Not applicable (trace fossil genus)
  • Morphology Features: The Triassic trace fossil burrow exhibits tunnel-like structures, indicating the activity of burrowing organisms. These burrows are preserved in sandstone and show evidence of the organism’s interaction with the substrate, revealing details of the ancient terrestrial ecosystem.
  • Geological Stage: Triassic (~250-200 million years ago)
  • Depositional Environment: The burrow was formed in a terrestrial environment, typical of the Wilsmslow Sandstone Formation. During the Triassic period, the area was likely a semi-arid region with episodic flooding, allowing organisms to burrow into the soft sediments.
  • Biozone: The fossil is from the Triassic biozone, representing early terrestrial ecosystems during a period of significant evolutionary development in both plants and animals.
  • Family: Not applicable (trace fossils)
  • Super Family: Not applicable (trace fossils)
  • Order: Trace Fossils (Ichnology)
  • Formally Identified By: This fossil has been professionally identified based on its morphological features and the geological context of its discovery in the Wilsmslow Sandstone Formation at Alderley Edge, Cheshire, UK.

Size and Visuals:

The fossil measures approximately as shown in the attached photo. A scale rule (1cm squares) is included for accurate size reference. The photo shown is of the actual specimen you will receive, carefully selected to showcase its exceptional preservation and intricate details.

Authenticity and Certification:

All of our fossils are 100% genuine specimens and come with a Certificate of Authenticity, ensuring the provenance and authenticity of the fossil. This Triassic trace fossil burrow from the Wilsmslow Sandstone Formation is a fascinating glimpse into the behavior of ancient life during the Triassic period and makes a valuable addition to any fossil collection.

Triassic Information

The Triassic Period (252–201 million years ago) marked the beginning of the Mesozoic Era, following the Permian-Triassic mass extinction, the most severe extinction event in Earth's history. The climate was hot and dry, with vast deserts and little polar ice. Life slowly recovered, leading to the rise of the first dinosaurs, pterosaurs (flying reptiles), and early mammals. Reptiles, including large archosaurs (ancestors of crocodiles and dinosaurs), dominated both land and sea. In the oceans, ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs thrived alongside ammonites and early coral reefs. The first true conifers and ginkgo trees spread across the land. The period ended with another mass extinction, paving the way for the Jurassic and the golden age of dinosaurs.
