Triceratops, meaning “three-horned face,” was a genus of large, plant-eating ceratopsid dinosaurs that lived during the very end of the Cretaceous period. Roaming the ancient floodplains of what is now North America, this iconic dinosaur is known for its massive skull adorned with three prominent horns and a large bony frill, making it one of the most recognisable dinosaurs in history.
Despite its intimidating appearance, Triceratops was herbivorous. It possessed a beak-like mouth and hundreds of replaceable teeth designed for shearing through tough Cretaceous vegetation. These dinosaurs could reach up to 9 metres in length and are thought to have weighed between 6 and 12 tonnes.
This genuine Triceratops fossil bone fragment was unearthed from the fossil-rich formations of South Dakota. Such pieces offer a tangible connection to the world of dinosaurs, making it an exciting acquisition for any fossil enthusiast, teacher, or budding paleontologist.
