Specimen: Triceratops Bone Fragment

Age: Cretaceous Period

Location Found: South Dakota, North America

Triceratops, which literally means “three-horned face”, is a genus of herbivorous ceratopsid dinosaur that first appeared during the late Maastrichtian stage of the late Cretaceous period, about 68 million years ago (mya) in what is now North America. The Triceratops had a sharp hard beak and rows and rows of teeth, some having as many as 800 teeth, allowing them to slice and crush all sorts of vegetation. Despite their fearsome appearance, they didn’t kill other dinosaurs for meat, but they likely would have defended themselves well from predators using their 3 horns which featured on one of the largest heads of any land dinosaur discovered.

Description

This listing features a genuine fossilised bone fragment from the iconic Triceratops, one of the most recognisable dinosaurs to have roamed the Earth during the Late Cretaceous Period, approximately 68 million years ago. This specimen was discovered in South Dakota, North America, a region rich in dinosaur fossil deposits from the Maastrichtian age of the Late Cretaceous.

Triceratops, meaning “three-horned face,” was a massive herbivorous dinosaur belonging to the ceratopsid family. Famous for its large bony frill and three prominent facial horns, Triceratops was a plant-eating dinosaur that relied on its strong beak and battery of up to 800 teeth to shear through tough vegetation. Despite their formidable appearance, these giants were not predators, though they were likely capable of defending themselves from carnivorous dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex using their horns and size.

Triceratops remains are particularly valuable to both science and collectors due to the species’ widespread representation in the fossil record and its important role in understanding dinosaurian ecosystems and herbivore adaptations during the Late Cretaceous.

This bone fragment is an authentic piece of prehistoric life and makes a perfect addition to any fossil collection, educational display, or natural history enthusiast’s showcase.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
