Triceratops, which literally means ‘three-horned face’, is a genus of herbivorous ceratopsid dinosaur that first appeared during the late Maastrichtian stage of the late Cretaceous period, about 68 million years ago (mya) in what is now North America. The Triceratops had a sharp hard beak and rows and rows of teeth, some having as many as 800 teeth, allowing them to slice and crush all sorts of vegetation. Despite their fearsome appearance, they didn’t kill other dinosaurs for meat, but they likely would have defended themselves well from predators using their 3 horns which featured on one of the largest heads of any land animal discovered.

Description

This listing features a genuine fossilised bone fragment from a Triceratops, one of the most iconic dinosaurs to ever roam the Earth. Unearthed from the world-renowned fossil beds of South Dakota, USA, this piece is estimated to be around 68 million years old, dating back to the Late Cretaceous Period.

The Triceratops (meaning “three-horned face”) was a herbivorous ceratopsid dinosaur that thrived during the final days of the dinosaur era. These majestic creatures measured up to 9 meters in length and weighed over 6 tons. Known for their fearsome appearance, complete with two large brow horns, a smaller nose horn, and a massive frilled skull, Triceratops likely used these features for defence against predators such as Tyrannosaurus rex.

Despite their armour-like appearance and sharp beak, Triceratops were peaceful plant-eaters. They possessed hundreds of tightly packed cheek teeth (some individuals had over 800 teeth!) designed for efficiently slicing and grinding tough prehistoric vegetation.

This bone fragment provides a tangible connection to this ancient titan. While not a complete bone, each fragment like this is part of a greater prehistoric puzzle and is ideal for collectors, educators, or enthusiasts looking to own a real piece of dinosaur history.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
