Trilobites were marine creatures that were one of the earliest groups of arthropods, and some of the most successful animals of their time, roaming the oceans for over 270 million years! The name Trilobite, meaning ‘Three Lobes’, was given to them due to their body being made up of three sections: a head, body, & tail. Although it is not uncommon to find whole Trilobite fossils, it can be a lot more common to find them incomplete, missing different parts of the three sections. These creatures varied in size, ranging from only a few millimetres to some species measuring in at around 12 inches!!

Description

Elrathia sp. Trilobite Fossil

This listing presents an Elrathia sp. trilobite fossil identified as Cambrian and associated with USA in the supplied product details. Elrathia is a genus of trilobite, an extinct group of marine arthropods that lived during the Palaeozoic Era. The “sp.” designation indicates that the specimen is identified within the Elrathia genus without assigning a particular species name.

Cambrian Fossil Identification

The Cambrian Period is especially important in palaeontology because it records a major diversification of complex animal life in the fossil record. Trilobites are among the most recognisable Cambrian fossils and are valued for their distinctive body organisation, mineralised exoskeletons and importance in understanding early marine ecosystems.

As trilobites, Elrathia specimens are scientifically interesting because trilobite anatomy was divided into a cephalon, thorax and pygidium, with a characteristic central axial region and paired side lobes. Trilobites grew by moulting their exoskeletons, and fossil material may represent a complete individual, a partial specimen or a shed exoskeleton. The exact visible features of the specimen offered here are shown in the photographs.

Collector and Display Interest

An Elrathia sp. trilobite is a strong addition to a fossil collection focused on Cambrian life, trilobite diversity or the history of early marine arthropods. It can also provide an engaging educational example for discussions of fossil identification, geological time and the development of hard-bodied organisms in ancient seas.

The specimen is suitable for collectors, educators, students and anyone interested in natural history. Its genus-level identification makes it useful for displaying how fossil classification can distinguish a recognised group while retaining an appropriately careful scientific identification.

Photographs and Sizing
