Description

Discover a genuine relic of ancient marine life with this beautiful Geesops sp. Trilobite Fossil, sourced from the Devonian strata of Morocco and dating back roughly 390 to 360 million years ago.

Trilobites were a highly successful group of marine arthropods that thrived in Earth’s oceans for over 270 million years. The name “Trilobite” is derived from their unique three-lobed body plan – a feature that gives these ancient creatures their name (from the Greek “tri” meaning three, and “lobos” meaning lobes). These lobes run longitudinally along the body and consist of the cephalon (head), thorax (body), and pygidium (tail).

The genus Geesops, from the order Phacopida, is especially noted for its large, well-developed eyes and finely detailed exoskeleton. These trilobites likely lived on or near the sea floor, scavenging or hunting small organisms, and are often preserved in exceptional detail in the fossil-rich limestone beds of Morocco.

The Devonian Period—often referred to as the “Age of Fishes”—was a time of great marine biodiversity, and trilobites like Geesops were among the most prominent marine invertebrates. Their fossils are not only scientifically significant but also striking in their intricate design and preservation.

This piece is a striking representation of early arthropod life and is perfect for fossil collectors, educators, or as a unique natural history gift.

Devonian Information

The Devonian Period (419–359 million years ago), known as the "Age of Fishes," was a time of major evolutionary advances in both marine and terrestrial life. The oceans were dominated by armored placoderm fish, early sharks, and lobe-finned fish like Tiktaalik, which had features that helped vertebrates transition to land. Coral reefs flourished, and ammonites became more diverse. On land, the first forests appeared, with early trees like Archaeopteris, leading to a drop in atmospheric carbon dioxide and climate cooling. The first tetrapods (four-legged vertebrates) began evolving from fish, marking a critical step in the evolution of amphibians. The period ended with the Devonian extinction, likely caused by ocean anoxia and climate shifts, wiping out many marine species and reshaping ecosystems.
