TURRITELLA FOSSIL GASTROPOD INTERNAL MOULD
This genuine Turritella fossil gastropod comes from near Lake Qarun in Egypt’s Western Desert. It dates to the Middle Eocene, an interval approximately 38 to 48 million years ago. The specimen is preserved as an internal mould, recording the shape of the shell’s interior after the original shell material was lost. MIDDLE EOCENE AGE AND EGYPTIAN GEOLOGY
During the Eocene, northern Egypt lay beside the warm Tethys Sea. Marine waters extended across areas that are now desert, depositing sand, mud and carbonate sediment rich in shells and other organic remains. Changing sea levels created a varied succession of shallow-marine, coastal and lagoonal environments.
The region around Lake Qarun and the wider Fayum Depression is internationally important for its Eocene geology and fossils. Today its dry landscape exposes rocks formed beneath ancient seas and along prehistoric shorelines. A fossil from this area therefore provides a striking connection between the modern Western Desert and a vanished tropical marine ecosystem.
FOSSIL TYPE AND INTERNAL MOULD PRESERVATION
Turritella is a genus of high-spired marine gastropods. The original shell grew as a tall, tightly coiled spiral composed of numerous whorls, producing the characteristic tower-like form. Gastropods are molluscs and include modern snails and their relatives. The living animal occupied the final opening and moved across or within the sea floor.
This specimen is an internal mould, sometimes called a steinkern. Sediment entered or filled the empty shell and hardened. The original shell material later dissolved, leaving the solidified internal infill behind. Rather than preserving the external shell surface, the fossil records the internal contour of the whorls. This preservation style is scientifically informative because it reveals a different aspect of the shell’s three-dimensional structure.
The designation Turritella sp. identifies the genus without assigning a more precise species. Its surviving high-spired outline, repeated whorls, natural matrix and mineral texture are authentic results of burial and fossilisation. Every fossil is individual, and variations in colour, preservation, attached sediment and edge condition are genuine geological features.
