Presented here is a VERY RARE 6-inch fossil ammonite of the species Erymnoceras argoviense, sourced from the Middle Callovian stage of the Jurassic period in the Aargau region of the Swiss Alps, Switzerland. Specimens of this species are highly prized due to their distinctive morphology and the limited accessibility of the fossiliferous strata from which they originate.

Geological & Scientific Information:

  • Species: Erymnoceras argoviense
  • Type: Fossil Ammonite (extinct marine cephalopod)
  • Geological Period: Jurassic
  • Stage: Middle Callovian (~165–163 million years ago)
  • Location Found: Aargau, Swiss Alps, Switzerland
  • Order: Ammonitida
  • Superfamily: Stephanoceratoidea
  • Family: Cardioceratidae
  • Morphological Features: Erymnoceras is recognised by its involute shell, rounded whorls, and finely ribbed flanks with occasional tuberculation. This specimen shows exceptional preservation, revealing diagnostic suture patterns and shell ornamentation typical of the genus.
  • Depositional Environment: The Aargau region during the Middle Jurassic was part of a shallow epicontinental sea rich in marine life. The fine-grained sedimentary deposits in this region allowed for excellent fossil preservation.
  • Notable: This species is geographically and stratigraphically restricted, adding to its scientific and collector value. Erymnoceras is significant for Callovian zonation studies in Alpine regions.

Additional Notes:

This is a museum-grade ammonite, perfect for collectors seeking rare European Jurassic fossils. The elegant preservation and prominent ribbing make it a striking display piece and a scientifically important specimen.
