VERY RARE Discoceratites Fossil Ammonite – Upper Triassic (Derived) Ely UK – Certified Authentic – Alice Purnell Collection
£60.00
A truly exceptional and very rare Discoceratites fossil ammonite, derived from glacial deposits and originally dating back to the Upper Triassic Period, found near Ely, United Kingdom. This unique and authentic specimen comes from the respected Alice Purnell Collection and is precisely the one shown in the listing photo.
Geological & Scientific Details:
- Fossil Type: Ammonite (Extinct Marine Cephalopod)
- Genus: Discoceratites
- Age: Upper Triassic (approx. 237–201 million years ago)
- Origin: Derived from glacial deposits in Ely, Cambridgeshire, UK
- Morphology Features: Typically discoidal shell form with fine to pronounced ribbing; this genus is notable for its symmetry and transitional morphology from earlier ceratitic to later ammonitic suture forms
- Family: Discoceratitidae
- Superfamily: Ceratitaceae
- Order: Ceratitida
- Depositional Environment: Originally marine in origin; the fossil was reworked and transported by glacial activity into Pleistocene-age gravels, making it a significant palaeogeographic find
- Notable: Fossils of this type are exceptionally rare in the UK due to their secondary deposition in glacial till; often regarded as geologically exotic erratics
This piece stands out not only for its age and preservation, but also due to its geological journey—transported by glacial forces and preserved in the Quaternary gravels of Ely. Such fossils are highly sought after by both collectors and researchers for their rarity and the insight they offer into Triassic marine life and Pleistocene glaciation.
This particular example has been professionally conserved and prepared for display or academic study. It makes a stunning addition to any serious fossil collection.
