Description
This listing showcases a VERY RARE and scientifically remarkable fossil of the heteromorph ammonite Discoscaphites nebrascensis, beautifully accompanied by fossilised gastropods on the matrix. This exceptional piece originates from the Fox Hills Formation of the Pierre Shale Group, located in South Dakota, USA — a formation celebrated for preserving life from the final chapters of the Cretaceous.
Discoscaphites nebrascensis is a distinguished member of the family Scaphitidae, superfamily Scaphitoidea, and order Ammonitida. This heteromorph ammonite displays a partially uncoiled, hook-like shell structure — an evolutionary departure from the tightly coiled ammonites, possibly reflecting ecological adaptations in the receding waters of the Western Interior Seaway.
Geological & Scientific Details:
- Scientific Name: Discoscaphites nebrascensis
- Fossil Type: Heteromorph Ammonite with Gastropods
- Geological Period: Cretaceous
- Stage: Maastrichtian (approx. 72–66 million years ago)
- Formation: Fox Hills Formation (Pierre Shale Group)
- Location Found: South Dakota, United States
- Order: Ammonitida
- Superfamily: Scaphitoidea
- Family: Scaphitidae
- Morphological Features: Uncoiled heteromorph shell with prominent ribbing and paired with fossil gastropods on matrix
- Depositional Environment: Marine to marginal marine conditions within the Western Interior Seaway
This specimen is particularly significant for its stratigraphic position near the Cretaceous–Paleogene (K–Pg) boundary. Discoscaphites nebrascensis is one of the few ammonite taxa believed to have briefly persisted into post-impact sediments, contributing to our understanding of extinction patterns.
