VERY RARE HETEROMORPH AMMONITE – HYPOTURRILITES GRAVESIANUS

Geological Age: Lower Cenomanian, Cretaceous (~100.5–98 million years ago)

Location: Chinnor, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom

Formation: Chalk Marl Formation

From the Alice Purnell Collection

Comes with Certificate of Authenticity

This exceptionally rare specimen is a heteromorph ammonite, Hypoturrilites gravesianus, collected from Lower Cenomanian strata in the chalk marl exposures near Chinnor, Oxfordshire. The species is known for its highly unusual shell form and restricted stratigraphic occurrence, making it a prized addition for collectors and institutions alike.

Unlike the typical planispiral coiled ammonites, Hypoturrilites species show a loosely coiled, helical shell, often resembling a stretched corkscrew. These highly unorthodox shapes reflect the evolutionary experimentation that ammonites underwent during the mid-Cretaceous period.

  • Species: Hypoturrilites gravesianus
  • Age: Lower Cenomanian (Early Late Cretaceous)
  • Location: Chinnor, UK
  • Formation: Chalk Marl Formation
  • Depositional Environment:
  • Shallow marine carbonate shelf transitioning to open sea marl and chalk deposits
  • Rich in marine invertebrate fossils including ammonites, belemnites, and bivalves
  • Order: Ammonitida
  • Superfamily: Turrilitoidea
  • Family: Turrilitidae
  • Morphology Features:
  • High-spired, helically coiled shell with distinct ribbing

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
