Description
This listing presents a Very Rare Plesioturrilites brazoensis heteromorph ammonite fossil from the Albian Stage of the Lower Cretaceous Period, approximately 113 to 100 million years ago. It was discovered near Fort Worth, Texas, USA, and is part of the renowned Alice Purnell Collection.
Plesioturrilites brazoensis is a distinctive species of heteromorph ammonite, known for its uncoiled and irregularly spiraled shell, which breaks away from the typical planispiral form seen in most ammonites. Belonging to the family Turrilitidae, these marine cephalopods are highly sought after for their unusual morphology and rarity.
The Albian Stage, part of the Lower Cretaceous, was characterised by warm shallow seas that covered much of what is now Texas. The region around Fort Worth was part of the Western Interior Seaway, a rich marine environment teeming with prehistoric life, including ammonites, marine reptiles, and early sharks. Fossils from this area are prized for their preservation and geological significance.
This specimen of Plesioturrilites brazoensis beautifully exhibits the unique coiling and surface ornamentation that defines the genus. Its ribbed shell structure and rare preservation make it a prime addition for any collector, educator, or enthusiast of paleontology.
