Waehneroceras portlocki Ammonite Fossil | Hettangian, Jurassic | Long Itchington Rugby UK | Alice Purnell Collection

£60.00

Fossil Type & Species:

This listing features a genuine ammonite fossil of Waehneroceras portlocki, a rare and early Jurassic cephalopod species from the Hettangian Stage. This beautifully preserved fossil was found in the Long Itchington area near Rugby, Warwickshire, United Kingdom, and comes from the respected Alice Purnell Collection, known for its high-quality and scientifically significant British fossil specimens.

Geological Formation & Insight:

Waehneroceras portlocki is an important early ammonite species from the Hettangian Stage, the earliest stage of the Jurassic Period (~201–199 million years ago). It belongs to the Psiloceratidae family, notable for relatively smooth shells with tightly coiled whorls and minimal ornamentation — a stark contrast to the heavily ribbed forms that appeared in later Jurassic ammonites.

The specimen originates from the Lower Lias Group, specifically Hettangian-aged marine mudstones and limestones. These sediments were laid down in shallow epicontinental seas that covered much of what is now central England. Fossils from this level are highly sought after due to their age, relative rarity, and excellent preservation.

Long Itchington, Warwickshire is a historically significant collecting site, with exposures that have produced early Jurassic faunas including ammonites, bivalves, and marine reptiles. Waehneroceras specimens from this region are not commonly found, making this a desirable piece for both collectors and researchers.
