Description

This listing features a beautifully preserved specimen of Nemagraptus gracilis, a colonial marine organism from the Ordovician Period, found in Llandrindod Wells, Wales, UK.

Graptolites are an extinct group of colonial animals that thrived from the Upper Cambrian through the Lower Carboniferous (~510 to 320 million years ago). They are believed to have been planktonic, floating in ancient seas, and their fossils are commonly found in black shales and mudstones, where they appear as intricate, threadlike impressions.

The name Graptolite comes from the Greek graptos (“written”) and lithos (“rock”), as their delicate impressions often resemble written characters or symbols on stone. Nemagraptus gracilis is a particularly iconic and well-researched species, known for its use as an important index fossil. It helps geologists date and correlate rocks of the Ordovician Period due to its broad geographic distribution and short stratigraphic range.

This is an excellent fossil for collectors, educational use, or as a conversation piece showcasing life from nearly 450 million years ago. The specimen displays the intricate morphology of the graptolite colony, and its preservation makes it ideal for both amateur and seasoned fossil enthusiasts.

Ordovician Information

The Ordovician Period (485–443 million years ago) was a time of marine expansion and biodiversity growth, following the Cambrian Explosion. Warm, shallow seas covered much of the continents, supporting trilobites, brachiopods, corals, and the first true reefs. Jawless fish (early vertebrates) diversified, and the first sea scorpions (eurypterids) became dominant predators. On land, the first primitive plants (moss-like bryophytes) began colonizing damp environments. The climate was initially warm, but by the late Ordovician, a major ice age caused a drastic drop in sea levels, triggering the Ordovician-Silurian mass extinction, which wiped out nearly 85% of marine species. Despite this, the period laid the foundation for the rise of more complex ecosystems in the Silurian.
