The Coal Measures are a stratigraphic unit of the Upper Carboniferous System, consisting of three primary formations in the UK: the Lower, Middle, and Upper Coal Measures. The area was teeming with plant life, including early ferns, lycopods, seed ferns, and horsetails, alongside giant arthropods and amphibians.
