The Nautilus (from the Latin name ‘sailor’) is a pelagic marine mollusc of the cephalopod family. It comprises six living species in two genera, the type of which is the genus Nautilus. Though it more specifically refers to species Nautilus pompilius, the name chambered nautilus is also used for any of the Nautilidae. Having survived relatively unchanged for millions of years, nautiluses represent the only living members of the subclass nautiloidea, and are often considered ‘living fossils’.

ACTUAL AS SEEN: The image shows the EXACT specimen you will receive. The specimen has been carefully hand selected and photographed. Measurements are as accurate as possible, though be aware measuring precise dimensions can be difficult from irregular shaped items. Whilst we portray colours as close to life-like as we can, colours will vary if taken in sunlight, indoors, from monitor to monitor and device to device. Once this specimen is sold, we will update this listing with new similar selected item, with a new photo and dimensions.

Genuine Cretaceous Nautilus Fossil from Madagascar

Offered here is an authentic Cretaceous Nautilus fossil from Madagascar, a beautiful marine cephalopod specimen preserved from an ancient tropical sea. This is a genuine fossil, carefully chosen for its quality, form, and display appeal. The photographs show an example of the actual type of specimen you will receive, representative in size, preservation, and overall appearance. Full sizing details can be clearly seen in the images provided.

This fossil includes a lifetime Certificate of Authenticity, supplied as a generic card, guaranteeing the specimen is genuine and responsibly sourced.

Geological Age and Marine Environment

This Nautilus fossil dates to the Cretaceous Period, approximately 145–66 million years ago, a time when dinosaurs dominated the land while diverse cephalopods thrived in the oceans. Madagascar, now an island, was once surrounded by warm, shallow seas rich in marine life. These waters supported ammonites, nautiloids, marine reptiles, fish, and countless invertebrates.

Marine sediments deposited during the Cretaceous in Madagascar created ideal conditions for fossil preservation. Fine limestones and marls gently buried shells after death, protecting them from destruction and allowing remarkable preservation over tens of millions of years.

Fossil Type – Nautilus (Nautiloid Cephalopod)

Nautilus fossils belong to the subclass Nautiloidea, a lineage of marine cephalopods that has existed for hundreds of millions of years. Unlike ammonites, nautiloids are represented today by the modern Nautilus, making these fossils especially fascinating as they connect directly to living relatives.

The shell of Nautilus is coiled and chambered, divided internally into a series of compartments. The living animal occupied the outer chamber, while the inner chambers were used for buoyancy control through gas and fluid regulation. This adaptation allowed nautiloids to move efficiently through the water column as active marine predators and scavengers.

Morphology and Preservation Features

Cretaceous Nautilus fossils from Madagascar often display smooth, elegant shell whorls with subtle growth lines and natural curvature. The shell form is typically more streamlined and less ornamented than ammonites, giving Nautilus specimens a classic and timeless appearance.

Natural mineralisation over millions of years has replaced the original shell material, producing a durable fossil with distinctive colour tones and textures. Each specimen is unique, shaped by both its original biology and the geological processes of fossilisation.

The specimen offered has not been artificially enhanced or reconstructed, preserving its authenticity as a true marine fossil.

Scientific and Educational Value

Nautiloid fossils are important for understanding cephalopod evolution, marine paleoecology, and the long-term survival of certain lineages across multiple mass extinctions. Because nautiloids persist today, these fossils are frequently used in teaching collections to illustrate evolutionary continuity and anatomical comparison between extinct and living forms.

They also provide insight into Cretaceous marine ecosystems, where Nautilus-like animals played a key role as mid-level predators within complex ocean food webs.

Collecting and Display Appeal

Madagascar marine fossils are internationally renowned for their preservation and aesthetic quality. A Nautilus fossil makes an exceptional display piece for collectors of ammonites, cephalopods, or Cretaceous marine life. Its smooth coiled form is visually striking and works beautifully in fossil cabinets, study collections, or as a unique educational gift.

This listing represents a carefully chosen specimen, with photographs showing an example of the type you will receive. Supplied with a lifetime Certificate of Authenticity, this Cretaceous Nautilus fossil from Madagascar is a genuine piece of ancient ocean history, preserved for millions of years and ready to be appreciated today.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
