Rare cenoceras inornatum fossil nautilus – toarcian, jurassic, lyme bay, dorset, uk – coa

Original price was: £60.00.Current price is: £48.00.

This is a rare and well-preserved fossil of Cenoceras inornatum, an extinct nautiloid from the Lower Jurassic (Toarcian, ~180 million years ago), discovered in Lyme Bay, Dorset, UK.

Cenoceras is a genus of straight-sutured nautiloids that thrived in Jurassic seas. Unlike ammonites, nautiloids had a more simplistic internal chamber system and are considered ancestors of modern nautiluses. Their streamlined, coiled shells provided buoyancy control, making them active swimmers in prehistoric marine environments.

This specimen is from the famous Lyme Bay region on the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its rich fossil deposits. It represents a glimpse into the marine ecosystems of the Early Jurassic.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
