Spinosaurus, which means Spine Lizard, is a genus of Theropod Dinosaur that lived during the upper Albian to upper Turonian stages of the Cretaceous period, around 112 to 97 million years ago. This dinosaur was among the largest of all known carnivorous dinosaurs, possibly outgrowing Tyrannosaurus & Giganotosaurus, and was recognisable by a long crocodile-like snout & a large spine sail on its back. Spinosaurus was well adapted to roaming land or water, much like a modern-day crocodile, making it one of the first dinosaurs that could swim successfully and choosing to spend most of its life in water than on land! The mouth of this dinosaur housed an assortment of teeth: two giant canines jutting out of its front upper jaw, a few bigger ones set further back in the snout, and a variety of straight, conical, grinding teeth in between. This most likely reflected Spinosaurus’ varied diet, which included not only fish but occasional servings of birds, mammals, and possibly even other dinosaurs!

Description

Own a piece of prehistoric history with this genuine Spinosaurus Dinosaur Tooth Fossil, unearthed from the Cretaceous sediments of Morocco, dating back approximately 112 to 97 million years ago.

The Spinosaurus, meaning “Spine Lizard”, was a truly unique genus of large theropod dinosaurs. With its elongated crocodile-like snout, straight conical teeth, and a distinctive sail-like structure formed by elongated neural spines on its back, Spinosaurus is considered one of the largest carnivorous dinosaurs ever to walk the Earth—possibly even larger than Tyrannosaurus rex and Giganotosaurus.

What sets Spinosaurus apart is its apparent adaptation for a semi-aquatic lifestyle. Fossil evidence suggests it was a powerful swimmer, with paddle-like feet, dense bones for buoyancy control, and a diet heavily based on fish, though it likely fed opportunistically on a variety of smaller animals. Its teeth were non-serrated and adapted for gripping slippery prey, making them quite different from the blade-like teeth of other large theropods.

This fossil tooth shows the characteristic straight, conical shape of Spinosaurus dentition and comes from the Kem Kem Beds of the Sahara Desert in Morocco, one of the world’s most productive fossil sites for Cretaceous theropods.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
